Hello, hello!

As many of you know, elecTONIC hosts a weekly podcast on uSTREAM dedicated to showcasing elecTONIC’s both newer and veteran DJs. Having grown substantially since its inception two semesters ago, it’s become a veritable midweek party as well as an online DJ showcase. But what the club’s officers are sometimes asked is, “I enjoy elecTONIC.TV, but I wish there was a way for me to listen to these sets on my computer, iPod, or other generic music listening device.”

Well, fear not! Thanks to eTV’s wonderful host Neeloy, we’ve got two downloadable sets from February 1st’s show. Both featuring some very tantalizing techno and tech house, they explore the different yet overlapping styles and sounds that represent the genres today.

Don’t forget to also check out JK’s set from last weeks eTV, and go to the main eTV page to access many more recorded shows, including this week’s!

In some circles, it’s all the rage. In others, it’s hated like the plague. Some see it as catchy and groovy. Some see it as soulless and bland. Whatever your opinion, however, there’s no denying it’s a rapidly rising rhythm.

It’s moombahton.

The story of how it all began’s been told many times before. The short version is simple: a Los Angeles DJ named Dave Nada was playing a crowd of high school kids, and while his big thing at the time was Dutch House, they listened to slower music like reggaeton. So he took the Afrojack remix of Chuckie & Silvio Ecomo’s “Moombah”, slowed it down 20 bpm… and the crowd went wild, and a genre was born.

Moombahton is a portamentau of “moombah” with “reggaeton,” and describes a style of dance music between 105 and 112 bpm with simple construction, chirpy synths and a Latin-inspired beat. An off-shoot called “moombahcore” incorporates brosteppy wobbles and darker sounds into the mix while keeping the BPM low.

Personally, I’m not a fan of the original “moombahton” track, but since Dave kinda sorta invented the genre, I’d be loath not to include at least one of his works. He’s been at his best when paired up in the studio with Matt Nordstrom, and their collaborative works are aptly released under the name “Nadastrom.”

Now, the reason I got into moombahton myself was via the production of another L.A.-based dude, the young Dillon Francis. While his early releases were some above-average brostep, he was one of the first to jump on the moombah bandwagon and nabbed the aesthetic faster than pretty much anyone else on the scene. His beats were musically clean yet oh so dirty, and while sometimes his drops have disappointed (I’m looking at you, I.D.G.A.F.O.S.), he’s got the right mentality for the scene and only keeps getting better.

Recently, the blogs have been all abuzz over a guy called David Heartbreak, or Heartbreak for short. Capable of making some luscious grooves (nicknamed “moombahsoul”) and also some unabashed party music, most of the sources I’ve been looking at treat him like the next big thing.

Lastly, it’s my personal favorite producer in this style. It’s funny how small of a world musically producers seem to occupy. Noted DnB trio Evol Intent’s Ashley Jones has had a very successful side project as the funk-tastic house producer Treasure Fingers. Bandmate Nick Weiller wanted a bit of some solo action too, so he’s been making some great tracks under the alias Bro Safari. Moombahton’s often knocked as being overly simple, and so what I love about Bro Safari’s work is that he makes it interesting without ruining the simplicity of it all.

Moombahton’s still a genre in its infancy, and hasn’t quite hit mainstream consciousness. But if it’s big enough for Hard Miami to devote an entire day to it… well, I don’t think we’ll be hearing the last of it anytime soon.

Top Ten Techno Songs of 2012 – January’s Roundup of The Best Techno Tracks

It’s only been a month of 2012 and my ears have already been spoiled with some delicious techno dance floor destroying motha f*@!ing ch00n so I thought to share with yall! Enough of me yammering and let’s cut to the chase. Order does NOT mean ranking, what’s the point of ranking them when they are all perfect? (it’s like ranking a full room of beautiful women – something you just don’t do).

*WARNING CONTENT INTENDED FOR MATURE AUDIENCES ONLY*
*Curtains Drop*

SEI A has been quiet…quietly being a genius and once again bending our perception of the beat-norm with these enigmatic beats. WHAT THE FLUX!

Bass king Christian Smith has produced a complete dance floor murder with nothing but a beat and some change. Dun Dun Dun Dun Dun Dun…Get it Done!

They say that techno is for rebels and I say it maybe true…the new school techno is not trying to impress you, in fact it doesn’t give a f*** that’s why it’s good.

Honestly I couldn’t find a less distasteful album art version of this track, so there you go you know this song is about about bootyay.

Yea I realize at this point I stepping into dangerous territory, what’s dangerous? My middle name?

Wood peck me a woodpecker then peck me some wood pecking peckers.

Hot Release from the Dirty Dirty Dirty Bird Label, damn just sick.

Usually I’m not all about remixes of rock songs because it’s all usually done with poor taste, let me know what you think of this one?

That’s all for me right now. Drop me tube links in the comments if you find good tracks and i’ll add them. The last 2 spots are for yall.

Hey all! My name’s Tev, you might know me under my DJ names Inter or Hexaphobia, and I’m thrilled to be running the blog this semester. Expect to see some great music pop up here from artists young and old, mainstream and indie, current or retro. Any and all styles of electronic music are welcomed here.

2012 looks like it’s going to be a fun year, with full-length albums coming from Air, Paul Van Dyk, The Knife, Rusko, and The xx among others. Here are three somewhat smaller names that I think I’m going to be excited for in the coming months.

Shigeto

If you haven’t heard of Ghostly International, it’s a label you really need to follow. They’ve been putting out consistently great music from their talented roster, and Shigeto is among their best. His chilled glitch hop offerings are lush and deep, yet remain accessible to the average listener. His album “Lineage” comes out on the 31st, and in preparation he’s released two beautiful tracks from the album. Pick ‘em up.

 Lineage by SHIGETO
 Huron River Drive by SHIGETO

Tornado Wallace

Just a week ago, I had never heard of Australian house magician Tornado Wallace, but I can safely say that a week’s courtship is enough to fall in love with his impeccable grooves. His latest EP “Underground Sugar Caves” just hit Beatport, and once you’ve heard Insect Overlords, you might fall in love just as quickly as I have.

Tornado Wallace – Insect Overlords – preview by Tornado Wallace

Brodinski

Frenchman Brodinski knows how to make good tunes. He’s spent years putting out quality tracks like “Peanuts Club” and “Fire Flames,” but I’ve got a hunch that 2012 is going to be his best year yet. In addition to his normal string of solid remixes, he and Guillaume Briere have put out an amazing mixtape under their recently unveiled side project, Gucci Vump. It’s slow, it’s sexy, and it’s sublime. Mmmmmm.

elecTONIC is throwing the most anticipated event of the semester: the Silent Dance Party (SDP)!

Download the mixes now!
http://www.mediafire.com/?gt6t4ar9f863gkf
Put them in a playlist on your music player!

This is how it works:

1.) Download the mixes! Test them out to make sure they work, but DON’T listen to the whole mix beforehand! (That would ruin the surprise.) Sync the three mixes to your portable music player of choice (it’s best to put them in a playlist).
2.) On THURSDAY, OCTOBER 20th @ 6PM, we will meet on the steps of Upper Sproul. We all press PLAY at the same time, and then we… DANCE!

Things you will need:
• Portable music player + headphones
• Comfy shoes
• Jacket (just in case it’s cold)
• Your best dance moves

We will be migrating to two other locations throughout the dance party.
After the party, all submitted mixes will be available to be downloaded.

Check out the following blog post to see photos and videos of our first SDP:
http://electonic.us/2009/10/silent-dance-party-win/

Hope to see you all there. (:
His style evolves from his fusion of bright-sounding synths with his signature glitchy wobble bassline. Hailing all the way from Honolulu, Hawaii, this up-and-coming producer has engineered albums for Kanye West, Jay-Z, and Kid Cudi. Producer, engineer, and local DJ at Waikiki’s popular clubs, we have a triple-threat on our hands. Recently, Glitchdick scored a spot on the lineup of Hawaii’s Summer Wonderland alongside rising dubstep producer Crizzly. His music has been featured on high-profile music blogs, such as thissongslaps.com, which is where I found him!

Q: What got you into electronic music? Which genre lured you in?
A: I didn’t know nothing about genres back then, I was just into going to raves and going fucking nuts. Hardcore raver since I was 19. My first EDM stuff was ATB back in ‘03.

Q: You started off as a DJ and then got into producing?
A: Actually, I started as an engineer. I was an engineer at a studio. What we do is record, set up the whole session, run the boards, and all that stuff. All the wires and crazy shit. Then I became a DJ, then a producer.

Q: Did you go to school for that stuff?
A: Yeah, I went to the Conservatory of Recording Arts in Arizona.

Q: What do you use to produce?
A: Logic. Massive for synths.

Q; What gets you rollin when you start producing?
A: I don’t know. It just happens, haha.

Q: I really like your style. You definitely bring something new to the table.
A: There’s so much boring dubstep. I fucking hate 90% of dubstep, honestly. It sounds like people dying in a cemetery, it sucks. I like happy music.

Q: Who are your influences?
A: Definitely, Kanye. I love Rusko. Fuck, everyone is on Skrillex’s dick, so I have to list him as well. Fuck him, but I love him. His music is so dope.

Q: Who’s your favorite DJ?
A: Daftpunk, hands down. Even thought they aren’t really DJs, when it comes to live performance, yeah. They brought it all. Without them, none of this shit would happen right now. They are the shit. Their giant fucking Illuminati triangle and shit like that. Fuck I’m gonna join the Illuminati and have that fucking shit when I get the money. I promise.

Q: How long did ‘Seek Bromance” take you to remix?
A: Probably took me about 100-200 hours. It’s hard to count it by days, maybe two weeks. It takes so long to mix it and put the effects and all that nerdy bullshit.

Q: Do you co-produce your stuff, or is it all on you, because at first, I got confused seeing “Glitchdick featuring Christian the Lion”.
A: Both me, just two different people in my head. Because I’m a fucking psycho.

Q: You have a baby?
A: Haha, yeah his name is Riley and he’s almost three-years-old. He’s awesome.

Q: Dang, life must have been really crazy these passed few years?
A: Yeah, I don’t sleep. I take care of a three-year-old. I DJ four nights a week at a club in Waikiki. I work at the studio and I work on music all day.

Q: Would you be willing to come out to UC Berkeley and do a gig with elecTONIC?
A: Fuck yeah, if I get a chance to go out there.

Q: Ultimately, where do you want to be?
A: Shit…on MTV, making mad money. I want that giant triangle.

-End-
